3 Ways to Customize Your Garage Door

Is your garage door boring? Does it look the same as all of the other garage doors on your block? Most neighborhoods have little creativity when it comes to the garage doors on their houses, but you can change this. Here are three DIY projects you can use to customize your garage door and make it stand out in your neighborhood.

DIY Faux Wood Finish

One of the easiest ways to upgrade and improve your garage door is to give it a fresh coat of paint, but if you are going to take the time to paint, why not improve the door with a faux wood finish? A wood-inspired gel stain in a light coat will make the garage look like wood without actually changing your door for a wood door. Be sure to clean the garage door well before you begin, and work quickly as many of these stains dry quickly.

Mimic the Carriage Style

Carriage style garage doors are a costly investment, but you can take your regular old steel door and transform it into one with a little bit of hardware. First, paint black windows on the top row of the garage door, using the four-panel look to make it more realistic. Next, add handles in the middle and faux hinges on the end, and your garage door will look like a prestigious carriage door.

Add Windows

Windows let natural light into your garage and also improve the aesthetics of your garage door. To install a garage door window, choose a window size that will fit within one panel of the garage door. Then measure the spot carefully, and use a jigsaw to cut out the opening. Attach the front of the window, and use caulk to seal the edges. Then, attach the back of the window, screw it all in place.

As you can see, personalizing and customizing your garage door is not hard. With a little bit of work and creativity, you can have a garage door that is the talk of your neighborhood!
